Spain on alert for snow, heavy rains, wind and waves

Several regions of Spain are on alert this Monday for bad weather including snow, rain, winds and waves.

In total 12 regions are on alert, especially Asturias and Castilla y León, where a red-level alert has been issued for snowfall, according to forecasts from Spain’s state meteorological agency (Aemet). Snowfall there is predicted to be as much as 40cm in 24 hours.

This comes after a drop in temperatures across the country over the weekend, as well as the first snowfall on Sunday afternoon in parts of northern Spain.

Snow and heavy rains

Snow is also forecast, albeit to a lesser extent, in parts of Aragón, Cantabria, Catalonia, Navarre, the Basque Country and La Rioja, with accumulations of up to 5cm in 24 hours forecast.

Heavy rains will mainly affect Cantabria, Castilla y León, Navarra and the Basque Country, which are all on yellow alert for rainfall that could as much 40 litres m/2 in twelve hours.

The Valencia region, along with Catalonia, Castilla y León and the Balearic Islands, are on alert for wind gusts of up to 80 km/h.

Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Galicia, Murcia and Valencia are all on yellow alert for strong waves. In Cantabria, Catalonia and the Basque Country the alert level is orange due to waves that could reach six metres high.

In general, the mainland peninsula and the Balearic Islands are experiencing poor weather due to an arctic air mass which, together with an approaching Mediterranean storm, is expected to cause rainfall in large areas of the northern half of the country as well as drops in temperature across Spain.

Generally speaking, during most of the morning and afternoon there will be intervals of rain and strong gusts of wind in large areas of the north and east, central mountain areas and the Balearic Islands.

In the Canary Islands there will also be moderate trade winds with strong intervals and cloudy intervals, with a low probability of weak and occasional showers in the north of the islands.

Posting on Twitter/X, Aemet stated that: “Monday 9th will be an unpleasant day in much of the country. Snowfall will be heavy, especially during the first half of the day, in the Cantabrian mountain range. Pay attention also to heavy rain and wind, as well as coastal storms.”

As you can see from the map below, the areas on weather alert are spread across northern Spain and in coastal areas of the east.
