Hugh Grant praises Spain

During an interview with leading Spanish daily El Mundo, English actor Hugh Grant made an interesting observation about social media and technology, which he defined as “gigantic corporations that now control our thoughts through algorithms”, to which he added “they have established a state of terror that controls our bodies with pharmaceutical products and disgusting eating habits”.

Grant said this was the case for England and the United States (with exceptions), but he had a very different opinion regarding Spain.

“This is not so true of Spain,” he began by saying. “You are lucky. Every time I come here I feel like I am in an oasis. What I see in Spain is what life used to be like.

“People seem sensible, nice, well-dressed, thoughtful,” he concludes.

Grant then took a dig at his home country by saying “Everything seems unhealthy to me. People seem more like consumers or victims than just human beings.”

Vox MP says social media helps youngsters see the ‘good side’ of fascism

Far-right Vox MP Manuel Mariscal Zavala has told the Spanish Congress that “thanks to social media” many young people are “discovering” that Franco’s regime “was not a dark period, but one of reconstruction and progress.”

“The time after the Civil War was not a dark period as this government is telling us, but rather a period of reconstruction, progress and reconciliation to achieve national unity,” argued the politician.

Spain’s royals photographed by Annie Leibovitz

The Bank of Spain has unveiled the portraits of the King and Queen of Spain that it commissioned from world famous portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz, much to the delight of the Spanish press.

Felipe VI is seen wearing the finest military attire and Letizia donned a black dress of pleated silk by Spanish designer Cristóbal Balenciaga.

Six months of preparation, hundreds of shots, four people working alongside the prestigious Leibovitz and more than a five-hour shoot have resulted in a diptych in the style of Velázquez’s Las Meninas masterpiece.
